Locus Amoenus
(Dragan Jovanovic DANILOV, 2015)

Gordana Tomic does not dive too deep in darkness; she creates her own world of the light of day. She is the author of an autochthonous visual painting myth. This artist treads into both, reality and vision, so she presents the world caught in one cataleptic state between dream and reality. The landscapes she paints are actually a kind of differently shaped reality. The geographical landscape here permanently determines the internal, mental landscape. The sight on the observation field is not taken shrill and sharp but through the lens of coloratura fluidity. Gordana Tomić on her canvases develops various forms of locus amoenus, a place of happiness and enjoyment, a lovely space of the Earthly paradise. Distinctive disposition of the stone walls, stairways and parks that are eye opening give her paintings a mite of something oneiric. It is the combination and reconciliation of the Mediterranean psyche and the Northern dedication and balance that give these paintings the bright of shine and cheerful confidence. A light, as has already been said in the scriptures inherited, may shine from itself only one who himself has a light in the soul.

In front of us is a scenic, poetic, musical artist with a fine sensibility who through the poetic spiritualization knows how to find new, surprising configuration of her scenes. It is interesting to see how an artist of Mediterranean spirituality experienced Central Park. She evokes a poetic rather than factual "Central Park". For her, "Central Park" is not just a mere place on the geographical map of a big city, but a distinct civilization replica, a part of an internal mythology, something alive and fresh, a real essence, the space of self-realization.

The painting "Wall Street Bull" in which she figuratively does not waive abstract alibi, Gordana evokes tremendous bullish enthusiasm, indomitable fury, inordinate fertility, unbridled rampage that runs the force. Paradoxically, static bullish mass here has turned into a strong movement and warlike spirit.

Paintings of Gordana Tomić have a sunny character. All on them artistically vibrates, but stays stylistically pure, saturated with a deep breath of life, what the Greeks call pneuma. The harmony is the essential, ideological and semantic feature of this painting, especially as compliance and measure are something that exists in the artist herself. Furthermore, she is oriented to eastern spirituality which is anything but pure ether and the fluid and the craving for distant horizons. Gordana Tomić cares for the Beautiful and the Beautiful is, according to Plotinus, “the flower of the intellect”. Her painting just tends to express the state of the flower of the intellect. In her paintings, we find something of the Romantic conception of the Beautiful – something close to the Novalis’ idea that the world needs to be romanticized over and over again.

The path to these paintings was not easy. That is the path of clarification and Zen purification against all odds that could disrupt the harmony of the painting. Gordana Tomić knows how to spiritualize her work with feminine ecstasy and with the sense of proportion. For her, as well as for the ancient poets, nature is Magna Mater, the Great Mother. For instance, with "Sakura", Gordana Tomić managed, through the floral symbolism of cherry blossoms and the magic of the fruitfulness and fertility of nature itself, to display the spiritual residence of happiness and flowering of the intellect with a warm lyrical elevation and the coloristic eroticism.

In the paintings "Japanese Garden", "The Light of a Real Sword" and "Stage MU – All Becomes One" we find a kind of purity of prayer, the call to renew the genuine contact with the elements. The above mentioned paintings exude a feeling of something unreal and this artist has achieved its purpose by a high ethereal mist that suggests distance. Gordana Tomić is the enemy of all that is predefined and stiff. The stiffness of the matter is softened by a mild disappearing of lights, by an astounding silence that creates musical atmosphere. The red and ochre carry a sumptuous coloristic range. Gordana Tomić has dissolved the solid form, by turning her scenes into suggestive color vibration. This artist does not describe silent, contemplative temperament, but she expresses inner understanding on her canvas, the mental perception of the scene that excites her. Visible world in Tomić’s painting field becomes imaginary and the imaginary world transforms into reality. Her painting is in the service of research of abyss of esoteric, spiritual intimacy. Gordana’s paintings, as well as Ancient China's lyrical poems, indicate and suggest rather than impose things clearly. Scenes of Gordana Tomić give the impression of some kind of spatial transcendence and metaphysical mystery. They bring us the most on the place where this artist was lucky to be irrational − in the sunlight, in white-sky; what is in the alchemical dictionary called as albedo.

In the painting field we feel and read rich emotional charge and cover of deeply intimate confessions. Dionysian joy decides everything on these paintings that are certainly considered to be gestural drama and coloristic music. Spirit of organized sensitivity, peace and harmony latently pervade this painting in which everything is optically and harmoniously combined. Fresh blue, autumnal ochre and old gold are the colors of perpetuation, temporality, duration... Gordana Tomić reveals the beauty of the scenes which have to thank the creator for their existence.
